A picnic in a green area
The park is a traditional choice for a picnic. Antwerp and its districts have 50 parks and gardens. Den Brandt in Wilrijk is a favourite with many Antwerpers as it is one of the most beautiful parks in the city. Middelheim Park is also nearby. In this open-air museum you can picnic among sculptures by such artists as Auguste Rodin and Erwin Wurm.
Another park which is quite popular is Park Spoor Noord. This huge landscape park has several assets such as a shed for events, a modern fountain and various playgrounds. There is also a skate bowl for teenagers and sports fields. The city opted in favour of an open park with few trees, making it the perfect place for sun worshippers.
The city of Antwerp has a list of all its parks on its website.
A picnic by the water
The quays are perfectly suited for a picnic with a view of the River Scheldt. ’t Vlot is located near Suikerrui and is the moorings for the Flandria boats. But Antwerp’s youth also likes to come here and unwind. ’t Vlot is a favourite picnic spot and can be very busy on summer days.
If you want a quiet place to lunch then follow the quays northwards. Sloepenweg, near Rijnkaai, is a nice green area where you can enjoy a picnic by the River Scheldt. It is also a good opportunity to visit the Red Star Line Museum in Montevideostraat.
If you choose to picnic near MAS you will probably also inspire others. Godefriduskaai was recently renovated and as a result there is now a wide walking boulevard along Willem Dock and around MAS. Plenty of space in other words to organise a picnic here with friends. A lot of people have yet to discover the renovated, hip Eilandje neighbourhood, so you will definitely be a trendsetter.
An “indoor" picnic
You have just got all your friends together for a picnic and then it starts to rain. Don't worry because we also have two spots for rainy days. The first one is MAS , which has two places where visitors can eat. First of all there is the roof terrace, which is perfect for a sunny day, but on rainy days you can also picnic indoors in the walking boulevard. The museum is the perfect place to go in all weather conditions in other words. You can request a picnic blanket from the ticket desk.
Theaterplein is partly covered which is definitely an advantage of rainy days. Spread out your picnic blanket under the gigantic structure which ensures that the square stays dry and watch the skaters perform their tricks. After your picnic you can also go to a theatre performance in Stadsschouwburg or Het Paleis.
