From a five-year-old migrant on the Red Star Line to one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century, Irving Berlin is undoubtedly living the American dream. He released hits like 'Putting on the ritz' and 'White Christmas' and eventually became 101 in New York, his home sweet home.

- Irène Bobelijn
As a six-year-old girl, Irène travelled after her parents in 1928. Destination: the unknown America. The young migrant leaves behind Flemish farm life for a childhood dream full of popcorn and Coca-Cola. When she returns a few years later, her "inappropriate" short skirts are the topic of conversation in the small village of Assenede.

- Rosy Van Hoecke
Sometimes the Red Star Line is the setting for a tragic love story. George has only just disembarked when he falls in love with the Belgian Annette in New York. Their tender happiness does not last. Less than three years later, George returns to Antwerp as a widower. On his arms: their daughter Rosy.

- Eugène Van Hove
Antwerp crew member Eugène travels around the world in 133 days aboard the Belgenland in 1927. He thoroughly enjoys all the excursions and the beautiful sea. The only drawback? 'Those stupid questions from the travellers on board' he writes.

- Leopold Lybeer
In 1911, the adventurous Leopold travels to Canada for the first time. He returns, but will make the crossing on the Red Star Line four more times. Leopold cannot forget the pristine Canadian landscapes. Unfortunately, he pays a heavy price: he loses both his cousin and his wife on his quest for a better life.

- Saif Lama’a Al-Taie
Syria. Iraq. Turkey. Saif has to flee from many countries without being able to say goodbye to his country, his art, his family. He makes the arduous crossing by boat and traverses Europe largely on foot. His migration story is the inspiration for later illustrations. They are recognisable images for other migrants looking for a home.
