Albert Einstein: famous passenger, welcome refugee

Discover the story of the Red Star Line shipping company from a unique perspective: that of Albert Einstein, a beloved guest aboard its ships.

A different view of the permanent collection

Want to experience the Red Star Line Museum in a different way? This guided tour offers a surprising perspective on the permanent exhibition. Together with a guide, you will dive into personal stories, photos and objects to learn how Einstein and his family were connected to the Red Star Line.

Albert Einstein and Red Star Line

As a famous scientist, Albert Einstein travels on the Red Star Line shipping company's vessels several times. In 1933, during his return trip from New York on the Belgenland, he receives the bad news that the Nazis are plundering his summerhouse. Being a Jewish scientist, he is not particularly well-liked by them. For safety's sake, Einstein decides not to travel on to Germany. He stays in Belgium with befriended scientists and artists. Several months later, Einstein embarkes with the Red Star Line once more to move to America for good.
