Many newcomers in Antwerp have come to our country as refugees. In a time in which more is spoken about them, rather than with them, their stories are worth hearing.

Destination Sweetheart

Migrants of love leave their homes, family and friends to build a future with their loved one. ‘Destination Sweetheart’ was an exhibition about migrating for love from the Red Star Line period to the present day. Letters, interviews and personal objects offered insight into heart-warming stories, as well confrontational ones.

The photographer Herman Selleslags and the author Pascal Verbeken took an unforgettable journey through Europe. They packed the diary of the Jewish teenager Benjamin Kopp, who was born in a village near Warsaw and was a Red Star Line passenger in 1912, in their suitcase.

Leopold longs for an adventurous life in Canada

He fought for his dream for more than 20 years
In the course of 20 years, Leopold Lybeer worked as a railway builder and herdsman in Canada. The financial crisis and his wife's nostalgia ended his Canadian adventure. Leopold would never forget the pristine landscape of Canada.

The Film 'Only One New York'

In 1963 Jan Yoors and the French film director Pierre-Dominique Gaisseau made the film Only One New York. Gaisseau won the first Oscar for a documentary in 1961 with the film Le Ciel et la Boue. The film documents a Franco-Dutch expedition through Dutch New Guinea. It focuses on tribes of cannibals.
